Why Inmates Need Pen Pals.
Drug addiction is a problem the world is struggling with and there are many people who are dealing with this problem who are behind bars. Apart from addiction, people who end up behind bars are struggling with something in their lives. Being behind bars is not fun and in order to keep in touch with the society, these inmates can benefit from the support of those who are free. Given that the inmates will be spending time with some of the most notorious criminals in the world, it is hard for them to be influenced positively. With pen pals, the inmates will be provided with a chance to get positive influence from the people who are free. Because of desperation, some inmates may rush to asking you for help with their legal situation, money or even gifts but the prison system does not approve of this. Your main concern should be striking a relationship with the person to the point where you can be the source of hope as well as offer positive encouragement.
If you are scared of communicating to an inmate by yourself, you may choose to write a group letter. A great group to join in doing this is the community and church inmate pen pal projects because there is a facilitator who will be handling the mailing for you.Be sure to ask about the crime the inmate is in for so that you can assess your feelings towards interacting with him or her. Do not be quick to judge people though because you may never know when your kindness and help will help someone to change for the better. Stay away from inmates who are proud of the crimes they have committed because to change such a person will be a burden to you.
You ought to tread carefully when you find yourself getting attached to inmate more than being a pen pal friend. Some inmates will have sad tales but remember it is not your job to fix what is wrong with them but rather support them through what they are going through because once you take up their suffering you will be treading on dangerous waters. If you realize that the relationship is getting out of hand, find a qualified person to help you sort through the issues and realize what matters. However, note that not all inmates are dangerous and some are really committed to paying their dues and making changes and the best you can do to them is show support rather than shunning them.
